ADAS camera recalibration, done in the shop after every windshield

The lane camera behind your mirror, calibrated to manufacturer specs with state-of-the-art equipment, so you skip the dealership.

When the camera behind your mirror is aimed a degree off

Your windshield is more than a pane of glass. On a newer vehicle it is the mounting point for the safety cameras, and those cameras only work when they look at the road from exactly the angle the manufacturer designed. Swap the glass, take a hit to the front end or change the alignment, and the view shifts. The camera does not know it moved.

That matters because six systems ride on it: lane departure warning, forward collision sensors, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, automatic braking, and parking and backup cameras. Aimed a degree off, lane departure warning reads the lines wrong, the cruise holds the wrong gap, and the brakes may activate late or when they should not.

Recalibration puts the camera's view back where the vehicle expects it. Done right, you notice nothing at all, which is exactly the point.

Inspection, calibration to spec, then the road

Step one is the glass itself: either a windshield replacement or an inspection of the one already in the car. Calibration starts from the glass: a new windshield set properly, or a close look at the one you have, so the camera is working from a sound starting point.

Step two is the calibration. We use state-of-the-art equipment and work to the manufacturer's specifications for your vehicle, in our own Oroville shop. There is no trip to the dealership, which saves you the extra appointment, the wait and the cost of a second stop. If you would rather talk it through first, call (530) 538-8100.

Step three is road-ready verification. Before the vehicle goes back to you, we verify the camera and the systems it feeds are working properly and safely on the road.

When to recalibrate again

Recalibration is not a one-time event for the life of the car. It is due after a windshield replacement, after the camera is removed or replaced, and after a front-end collision. It is also due after suspension or alignment changes, after an airbag deployment, and after any work that affects the camera's angle or position.

If a warning light comes on, or lane departure warning starts nagging on a straight road, the camera may have drifted. Tell us what happened to the vehicle and we will tell you whether it needs a look.

A chip that sits in the camera zone is worth asking about before it spreads. Filled early it stays a chip; left alone it becomes a replacement, and a replacement means recalibration.
